The World, a space station containing all two billion people left alive after the invasion and capture of Earth. Due to the psychic abilities of the invading aliens the location is undisclosed to even the people. The people who did know either shot themselves to save the others or got lobotomies to forget. They almost always forgot more than just what they wanted to get rid of.
It was pitch black. The only way John knew he was in a dropship was the constant rattling of other soldiers’ guns against their armour. John was wriggling around in his chair, “Fucking hell” he whispered as he tried to find a comfortable position. The commander walked from the cockpit with a small torch strapped to his chest. Its tiny cone of light bounced around as he drew near to the seated marines.
“Alright,” he said to the quiet soldiers, “You are about to perform the greatest duty one can for one’s country, fight,” he said. “This is going to be the operation that turns the tide of war. I want you all to show these alien bastards that if they take our home planet we’re going to take theirs,” The torch flicked from soldier to soldier, “I wish I could tell you where we’re going but it’s going to have to be a need-to-know basis, otherwise the aliens’ll know and blast us out of the sky,” he sighed “Now, if any of you have figured out where we’re going or have been told by somebody you have essentially sent us on a death ride. Don’t risk killing us, if you have found out the airlock is right behind me, make peace with your god and meet him in the afterlife.”
He waited until a few soldiers unclicked themselves from their seats and walked to the commander in single-file. The commander clipped some medals to the mens’ chests, “The government appreciates your sacrifice for the greater good.” He waved them into the open airlock and stared at the door for a few seconds. He walked in and turned to the soldiers still stuck in pure darkness, “The autopilot’s gonna get you fellas to our destination fine, once there you all should rendezvous with the nearest dropship, you won’t miss it. God bless you all.” He closed the door behind him and sealed it. Loud bangs rang out from the airlock into the bay. A blast of air was heard as the outer door of the airlock opened.
An explosion rocked the restrained soldiers in their chairs and blew the tail end out of the ship flooding the bay with light. The ship span around as it started its quick descent to the ground of the planet. Some soldiers were screaming and others had their rations get forced out of their stomach one way or another. Near the ground gunshots went off from soldiers in the ship who took the easy way out. The ground came into plain view of John and everything returned to infinite darkness.
