The Revolution
“Puff up dude, starting this thing is going to be a big ordeal” he said.
I took the toke and inhaled as hard as I could,
“Jesus, dude. Is this your first time?”
“Well…yeah.” we both looked at the gathered armies of the people’s army gathered at the hill overlooking the walled city. It was us vs the people who had forced us to work in the countryside. We had completely destroyed their armies, controlled their cities and taken every leader the court. But we knew what to do, we put every person on trial, a fair trial. A trial that actually enforced the ‘innocent until proven guilty’ model.
But this one city, it was the do or die. We knew that taking every other city would be necessary but it would not win us the war. This one city, with concrete walls that stretched as high as the great redwoods and militias that had the latest and greatest in military tech would be out final test. And they knew this.
One of the cannons discharged and flung a one hundred ton metal ball towards the wall.
“Jesus christ man, CEASEFIRE,” he screamed. The guy next to me, Z, as we called him, was the leader of my battalion, and he was my school friend so I Had an easy in. The cannons were lined up a hundred by a hundred on the hill. I looked at the wall and saw the nano-machines immediately going to work on the hole in the wall, we briefly snatched a glimpse of the city within this protective egg. Despite the war outside, it seemed everyone continued on with their lives. Makes sense, no matter the circumstances unless you’re wealthy enough to not work , you’ll be going on wit your life until you get attacked personally.
The barrage of cannon fire would be deafening and the walls would need to bear the brunt of it wall l for a slight chance of being destroyed. Otherwise, the nano-builders would have material left to copy and could repair quickly. Z looked at me, “You’d better get in position. Good luck, man. This is our final battle . Let’s all hope it works out.”
I was freaking the fuck out. But I couldn’t let him see that, he was so cool and collected and I wanted to do him proud…then maybe we could go out for drinks once everything was over and talk about how we stayed so cool. I marched down the hill, covering my ears as I walked past the cannons. I knew I wouldn’t make it in time to my position unless Z halted the entire plan, so I at least wanted to keep my hearing once the firing started. And, just like that, it started. Even with my ears covered the fire was deafening. Explosions rocketed me around, just from the sound alone.
