Goodbye,

“Goodbye,” I said, with tears in my eyes. I knew this would be our last meeting, but I didn’t want to let on.

“What do you mean goodbye?” She said, “We’ll see each other soon enough.”

At this chasm of the rift atop the edge of space, she had no trace of irony, no trace of sarcasm. As electrical storms consumed us, My suit’s pressure began plummeting. I knew before even checking my visor’s HUD. Quickly flicking through the interface, oxygen and pressure was in freefall.

“Stop checking that damn thing,” She demanded, “Just relax, there’s nothing we can do if everything goes wrong, just let yourself drift.” She was drifting further and further away from me, I didn’t know if we’d see each other again, let along if we’d survive. But, I knew she was right, I dismissed everything on the visor and just observed the void of the edge. The storms acted like a barrier but beyond that, there had to be something. Our universe couldn’t have been everything. Then, she was gone.

“Are you still there?” I asked, but I knew it was fruitless. If we could talk to the void, we would have figured this out already. I followed her lead, relaxed, and fell into the void. Beyond the storms we would find each other, one way or another. As lighting licked my suit, I felt more relaxed than I had in the comforting vacuum of space.
