20XX, it has been 40 years since the last government in Tokyo fell.
- The various governments of old have left people feeling fatigued with the whole ordeal, the general consensus being that governments are bloated bureaucracies that only hamper the growth of humanity
- Economic growth = the sum total work of humanity

New Chicago still has neighbourhoods with defined cultures and groups
- In the central and downtown areas, skyscrapers, especially residential ones, also have their own cultures. Often apartment blocks are built for workers nearby the offices they work, so coworkers will often in these situations be living in the same building too.
-
Advertising in offices is a given
-
Weapons dealers almost never give weaponry to regular peeps, or risk losing corporate clientele
-
Drugs aren’t regulated (natch) but most companies won’t let you work if you’re high. Even those companies that actually deal to people.
- Keep the man down and all that
- Companies have different policies, some completely forbid anything, some only allow stimulants, etc
-
Schools are expensive, and the most popular classes are ones like business, accounting, and social office studies.
-
There is one universal agreed-upon currency, the standard denomination or “buck”, but the only way everyone agreed was that it has to be independent of any one company’s control
- Forcing your own currency on everyone would be suicidal…unless you had the resources to back your efforts up
- Everyone knows that someone or something is regulating the buck, but they don’t know who or what. And things are running fine, so who cares?
-
Ambulance services in New Chicago are reserved for either those that have the insurance in that particular area or those that can pay the exorbitant upfront costs. Take YOURSELF to the hospital, lazy.
-
Companies of the past (IRL) weren’t able to cope with this completely private world, with many relying too heavily on government handouts
-
Religion is mostly outdated. Businesses of the past tried to encourage prayer and worship (mostly in profit-seeking ways) but this only hastened its downfall.
-
Labour unions have the same reputation as they do nowadays, a corrupt bunch of cronies and gangsters who only serve to make things worse for the people outside their cabal.
-
People still have some level of purchase power, meaning if a company slips up in a major way then they may lose people’s willingness to buy from them
-
A major selling point to potential employees for larger enterprises are investigatory wings. These take employee statements about any crimes that have been committed against them of their person and they track down the assailants.
- The level of coverage can vary, sometimes even loved ones are covered
-
White collar crime is somewhat rare as the things that would be considered crime are fairly normal here. Many still refuse to commit anything really heinous for both political reasons and for fear of retribution.
-
Land rights work kind of like a blockchain system. Each company knows what land every other company owns. When one makes an acquisition or a sale, they inform at least one other entity as a sort of witness.
Misc
- Every time someone’s about to say the year something cuts them off

- The history is presented by a company, so any mention of them in the story is hilariously biased, to the point of occasionally dipping into advertisement
